How to Land an Interview - Application Tips

Spring recruiting is coming quickly.  Many firms will be recruiting for internships and full time positions.  The application is your first step in the process and is very important.
Here are a few tips to make sure the application process goes smoothly for you:

1.    Know the deadlines – This spring, most firms have an application deadline of April 30th.

2.    Read the job postings on your University’s career site very carefully.  Each firm has slightly different application processes.  Many require you to apply on campus and to complete their firm application process at their site.

3.    Prepare your resume, cover letter and transcript now.  Most firms ask for these items. Have someone proofread your resume and cover letter.  At least a few times a year, I receive a cover letter addressed to another firm.  Attention to detail is important in public accounting.
4.    Resumes should be no longer than one page and should include:

a.     CPA eligibility date

b.    Graduation date and type of degree

c.     GPA and/or Major GPA

d.    Work experience with dates and company names

e.     Volunteering and other activities
Remember the application is your key to an interview.  Take the time to present yourself well.  Good luck!
